Denis Vladimirovich Chefanov was born in Tyumen (1974). He started playing music at the age of four. He made his debut on the stage of the Kazan Academic Opera and Ballet Theater (1981), then with the State Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan (1983). He graduated from the Secondary Special Music School at the Kazan State Conservatory named after N. G. Zhiganov with a gold medal (1981–1992, class of N. L. Khakimova, honored teacher of the Republic of Tatarstan). Graduated from the specialty (1997) and assistantship-internship (1999) of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory (class of Prof. N. L. Shtarkman). Laureate of international competitions in Russia, Sweden and Ukraine.
Assistant in the classes of N. L. Shtarkman (1999–2007) and A. A. Nasedkin (2007–2014). He teaches his own classes at the Moscow Conservatory (since 2014), at the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music (since 2017) and at the Central Music School at the Moscow Conservatory (2007–2017). Associate Professor at the Moscow Conservatory (since 2017), professor at the Moscow State Academy of Choreography of the Bolshoi Theater of Russia (since 2000s). Over the years of teaching, he has prepared more than a hundred laureates of international competitions. Visiting professor at the Japanese universities of Kurashiki (since 2013) and Niigata (since 2016).
He regularly gives master classes and gives concerts in Brazil, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, China, Latvia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Russia, North Macedonia, Syria, Finland, France, South Korea, Japan, Ukraine and other countries. He takes part as chairman and jury member of Russian and international piano competitions. Conducts an active concert activity: performs in large concert halls in Moscow, Almetyevsk, Barnaul, Belgorod, Vladimir, Vologda, Yelabuga, Ivanovo, Kazan, Kemerovo, Naberezhnye Chelny, Nizhny Novgorod, Novy Urengoy, Novokuznetsk, Omsk, Ryazan, Saratov, Tomsk, Tula , Tyumen, Khabarovsk and other cities of Russia and Belarus. Along with solo performances, he collaborates with several major Russian orchestras.
He also collaborates with well-known musicians from Russia and foreign countries, including: Nikolai Ageev, Filippo Arlia (Italy), Mikhail Burlakov, Maria Vlasova, Duncan Gifford (Australia), Alexei Mayevsky, Tatyana Kolesova, Rustem Kudoyarov, Viktor Lyadov, Pavel Minev ( Bulgaria), Kirill Rodin, Evgeny Rumyantsev, Elena Savelyeva, Alexander Selivanov, Tiantian Tang (China), Nadezhda Tokareva, Polina Fedotova, Oleg Khudyakov, Shanzhong Jiang (China), Naum Shtarkman (1927–2006), as well as the State String Quartet named after M. I. Glinka, the Ensemble of soloists "Classic Forum", etc.
Since 2010 he has been a member of the Piano Quartet of the Moscow Musical Society “Tempus Novum Art”
